By City of Gulf Shores, October 3, 2013
Gulf Shores, Ala – October 3, 2013 – City of Gulf Shores officials are actively monitoring developments with Tropical Storm Karen.
Like all of the northern Gulf Coast, the Gulf Shores area is currently under a Hurricane Watch. A Hurricane Watch indicates that hurricane conditions are possible within the next 48 hours.
According to the National Weather Service, coastal Alabama could begin experiencing tropical storm force winds as early as Friday evening and sustained tropical storm force winds late Saturday. At this time, 3 – 5 inches of rain is expected, with the potential for localized amounts reaching 6 – 8 inches.
While there remains to be some uncertainty with the storm path, officials anticipate 2 – 4 feet of storm surge and tides at 3 – 5 feet above normal. These conditions will present a high risk of dangerous rip currents and significant coastal flooding for low-lying areas. Red flags are currently posted on Gulf Shores beaches and swimmers are advised to stay out of the water.
